For years it’s attracted mainly graffiti and trash, but now it’s getting a whole new facelift, thanks to Perkasie resident Meghan Kennedy. She has made the beautification of the tunnel her Girl Scout Silver Award project. Lots of people are helping her on this major project, from Borough personnel to the Lions Club and several local businesses, plus other Scouts, both Boys and Girls.

The photo above shows Meghan at work on the main mural inside the tunnel, adding some detail to the trolley picture. I expect to post more photos here as the work progresses the next couple of weeks. It’s scheduled to be completed in early September.

I just had one of my older digital cameras, a Canon PowerShot G9, still a very capable camera, converted for infrared photography. In film days, we used infrared film for shots like this. But now with digital cameras, it requires a modified camera sensor for the most efficient recording of infrared light. I used a company in Massachusetts, Digital Silver Imaging, to convert my G9.

It was after 8 PM, almost dark, and in light rain when I took this photo from my car window (a drive-by shooting?) — definitely not ideal conditions, but still got a pretty nice result. I find infrared photography a fascinating medium, so you can expect to see more of Perkasie in infrared in future posts.

You know the awesome clouds I mentioned yesterday? When I looked back through my photos from yesterday, I discovered one that had captured them, after all! This photo of the picnic pavilion in Lenape Park was taken just ten minutes before the photo of the covered bridge I posted yesterday. These are the clouds that caught my eye as I was returning to Perkasie. The sun had just broken through a hole in the clouds as I was taking this shot, and I was at the right place at the right time. This photo is a good illustration of why I always have a camera with me. It’s not just luck, but being prepared for when the light strikes!

I began looking for a subject to take advantage. The Covered Bridge in Lenape Park is one of my favorite subjects, so I decided to see if I could find a way to capture it along with the clouds. Well, by the time I got parked and walked over to the bridge, the clouds as I first saw them were pretty well gone; they had already started to break up. But they were still interesting, and coupled with the blossoms on a few of the trees around the bridge, made an interesting subject. This photo was the result, photographed today (4-13-10).

Welcome! Perkasie.com has become a photo blog, showing off the best (and maybe sometimes the less than best) of our beautiful community of the Borough of Perkasie. I’ve lived here more than 25 years — since 1984. I love walking around town and documenting what I see with my camera.

This first post includes a photo of the covered bridge in Lenape Park, just off Walnut Street and Constitution Avenue. It was taken February 9, 2010 just after one of our major snowfalls. It’s a stylized digital photo using my HDR technique (as are many of my recent photos), combining 5 separate exposures into one for more detail. It was also converted to black and white with a wash-type frame added.
